1. Rosacea is a skin condition that usually affects the central part of the face. Most sufferers experience flushing which can become a permanent redness to the cheeks, the chin and the nose.
2. It is believed that up to 1 in 10 people may have rosacea although many don’t realise it.
3. Roscaea can affect people of any age but it most commonly appears between the ages of 30 and 55. The condition is more common in women than men. It particularly affects thoise with fair skin.
4. The cause of rosacea is unknown. However, many sufferers report a tendency to facial flushing in their childhood.
5. Rosacea tends to come and go periodically. Most sufferers though are inclined to avoid common triggers that cause a flare-up of the condition. These include hot food and drink, alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine, temperature changes and exposure to sunlight.
6. In most cases the condition can be treated with anti-biotics although in extreme cases surgery and laser treatment is used.
7. Many roscaea sufferers have to avoid certain foods. These include chocolate, dairy products (including yoghurt and cheese), tomatoes, bananas and raisins. Alcohol should also be avoided.
8. Ensure that products such as soap, moisturizers, and sunscreens are alcohol free. Sunscreens with a factor of at least 15 should be used when going outside in the sun.
9. In some cases rosacea can cause irritation to the eyes. Symptoms can include stinging or itchy eyes or eye lid problems such as cysts and styes.
10. As well as the physical aspects, rosacea is known to have significant psychological effects on sufferers of the condition, lowering self confidence and self esteem.
